Woman charged with causing pedestrian’s death by colliding with her on faulty bicycle

SINGAPORE: A woman was charged on Wednesday (Aug 28) with causing the death of a pedestrian by colliding with her while riding a faulty bicycle.
Chinese national Li Lanying, 52, was handed one count of causing death by a negligent act, not amounting to culpable homicide.
According to the charge, Li was riding a bicycle along Martaban Road towards Balestier Road at about 9.10pm on Mar 8, 2023.
That stretch of road was a “single lane two-way road”, the charge stated.
Li is accused of riding the bicycle, despite knowing it was not in serviceable condition due to its faulty rear brakes.
This resulted in a fatal collision with Madam Lee Lai Kuen, 65, who had been crossing the road.
Li did not give any indication of how she would plead.
She was emotional, saying she had a sick husband and had family problems.
She said she did not know what to do with the charge, and that the situation at home “is bad”. Li added she did not have a Singaporean bailor – the court had offered her bail of S$15,000.
The court told her she could get legal help under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme.
Her case was adjourned for a pre-trial conference in September.
The penalties for causing death by a negligent act are a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both.
